The Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal have recently released the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom, which ranks 186 countries and assesses 10 economic freedom indicators, from property rights to entrepreneurship. Botswana has been ranked the second freest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa after Mauritius, ranking above FDI competitors such as South Africa.
Botswana’s economic freedom score is 72, the 27th freest economy worldwide and ranked above countries as such as Norway, Belgium and France. Botswana's overall score is 1.4 points better than in 2013, due primarily to improvements in investment freedom, trade freedom, and management of public finance.
